Trying something out: told an AI to help with a refactor, but not write any code for me. Instead, it should prompt me for each place I'll need to update, and check my work. (I told it not to write code snippets for me to copy and paste either.)

I'm hoping this'll solve the thing I hate most about refactors (worrying about missing something, holding the holistic list of changes in my head), but make sure I fully internalise all the changes to the codebase.

I alluded to automating my screenshot creation for Octavo's website and App Store page. I finally got round to writing a blog post about how I did it!

Because I am very susceptible to nerd sniping:

I just built a converter for ThunderScan image files. ThunderScan was a scanner that sat inside an ImageWriter dot-matrix printer: https://www.folklore.org/Thunderscan.html

Anyhow, Photoshop 1.0 could read the file format. So I used that as a reference for documenting the format (with a bit of AI help), and built a Swift tool to convert them to PNGs.

All this because I’m putting off packing for my trip tomorrow.

@isaiah@mastodon.social @bwebster@mastodon.social I never studied comp-sci… my scripting language required me reading up a lot on how parsers worked! The Swift-Parsing library was pretty helpful, and it had some good examples. I'd love to do something compiled, but I would need the right project (and free time!) to start from the beginning and learn about compilers.

@isaiah@mastodon.social @bwebster@mastodon.social oh, one thing to note: Xcodebuild output uses up tokens at a rate of knots. Work out a build command for your app that limits the verbosity, and put that in your claude file. It's also not very good at figuring out how to run Swift Testing tests, especially when it tries to run just one part of the test suite, so giving it commands for those ahead of time helps. I've got it running the tests and piping the output into a temp file and searching it for SUCCEEDED or FAILED.

I've used it on a bunch of apps including: Deluge (32k lines Swift, 16k lines business logic in SQL) Octavo (90k lines Swift, albeit the majority is tests) Forge (only 15k lines Swift, but it does contain my own scripting language) I'm actually surprised that Deluge is smaller, it's had _way_ more work put in... but so much of Deluge is really tightly written SQL, and all the boilerplate is codegenned at build time (so not counted).

@agiletortoise@mastodon.social it's ok, I haven't really done more than hint about it so far! (But I'm making the web page as we speak.) It's a PDF imposition/printing app. It can make folded booklets, or zines or business cards. It can also just clean up a messy PDF, e.g. you've got a scan and you need to tweak the rotation/crop of the pages, adjust the brightness, then place it within the safe margins of your printer. Built because I needed it myself, and thought others might find it useful :)

@fahrni@curmudgeon.cafe @grumpy_website@mastodon.online I have my problems with the old one — there shouldn't be a cancel button and a close box (it's confusing whether they do the same thing); why is Browse given the most prominent placing (and does anyone actually use Browse?); the Windows 95 combo box control didn't make it super clear that typing new stuff into it was as valid as picking from the menu. But the new one is worse. Now we have no close button _and_ no cancel. How do you close the window?
