Liquid Glass is the worst, most space inefficient UI ever created. I don’t appreciate anything about it.

Computers are tools. Meant to be used and used efficiently. They’re supposed to be user-centric.

Liquid Glass is the opposite of what helpful and useful computing should be.

We're now in the era of "Marketing Centric" -- where the designers will do anything to make Apple UI look good on Apple.com but who cares if it makes things unusable.

I will never understand how the most important, and *main* set of controls was reduced to a very tiny area that isn't very prominent and easily gets lost in muddied Liquid Glass.

This is a prime example of how to NOT design with users in mind.

At a glance, it's hard to even find it in the second screenshot. In the first, it's difficult to read its contents.

Not to mention the volume, scrubber, and time labels now take two steps to interact with them.

I've posted about this before but I got a little more...

This is the all-new Settings window for FaceTime on macOS Tahoe. This is a shining example of how to NOT make a Settings window.

Checkboxes should not that full paragraphs as their text label. The left-hand labels should be section group names, not the name of the user-setting.

Checkbox titles are very short, and on the right. If you need more verbiage, use a tooltip. If you need even more verbiage, add a label under the checkbox.

I've said it before and I will say it again...

Whenever I use my MacBook Air, which still has macOS Sequoia on it, I feel far more at ease than when I use Tahoe.

Since you don't have content flowing behind sidebars or floating buttons and floating bars, there's more white. There is less distraction in your peripheral. It feels more peaceful.

I wish we could go back to macOS Mavericks UI because the Big Sur era was too white, but this is far better than Liquid Glass.

Have y’all tried this fancy thing called #AppKit?

You can totally override the way things draw in say like NSTableView by overriding NSTableHeaderCell/override func drawInterior(withFrame cellFrame: NSRect, in controlView: NSView). I made mine a bit darker because for some reason, Apple decided everything should be white, white, white.

I have a much more powerful table by using NSTableView over SwiftUI's `Table` in my SwiftUI app. :) ;)

@octothorpe@mastodon.online by the time I started college, the Intels were out but I had an older 12” I loved taking with me to campus because it was so portable. All Macs, including the Intel ones, were still on Tiger anyway and my 12” PBG4 supported Tiger just fine.

iOS 6 has to be the last iOS with well-designed UI. The UI is intentional and clear. It doesn't try to be anything more than that. It doesn't blur the lines between UI and user content. The UI is actually there as you need it rather than playing peek-a-boo with you. The visual affordances are very much appreciated. You know what is your stuff and what is a control or tool. And it makes *excellent* use of the very small real-estate available to it. It's refreshing to see.

This could be a case study on how design at Apple has gotten worse. Take iTunes/Music for Mac:

From Catalina on, full-height sidebars started eating into valuable toolbar real estate.
In Tahoe, not only to stupid big corner radii eats more into you usable area, they now allow the inspector sidebars to cut even more into toolbar space.
The volume & scrub controls are now an extra click away.

Just compare these newer UIs to #iTunes from 2010. Full-width, excellent use of space.

😎 @mjtsai@mastodon.social purchased DropDMG for macOS and oh my god what a time saver!!! I used it to stop publishing my apps and their Sparkle updates as .Zips (to finally stop that annoying app translocation bs) and get them over as DMGs. Everything works and everything went smoothly. Thank you for such a great app! Money well spent! :D
